Our
Beginings
The KFHL started in 1989 with the goal of giving 4th,5th, & 6th grade students a chance to take part in a sport that was
first of all fun and safe. We wanted to make this a different type of sporting experience for the children involved.
No long practices or high pressure to succede while still making it exciting for the kids involved. Something that both those
gifted with athletic ability and those unable to have success in some of the other sports would be able to enjoy.
Thanks
to some help from Kay Harzler (Community Education Director at the time) and her assistant Debbie Baker the first season began
in February of 1989. There were 4 teams and 49 players that first season, but though there were only a few games the KFHL
was off & running. Both boys and girls played in the league right from the begining game between the Canadiens and Maple
Leafs. In fact the first KFHL goal was scored by a girl !
The Red Wings dominated the regular season
play, but the Bruins upset them in the first Playoff Final Game 10 to 5. The Bruins Riley Fowler set a KFHL record of 8 goals
in that game.
