The Maple Leafs team in 1996 had an almost flawless season. After just getting by with a 3 to 2 victory over the Red Wings in their opening game they went on to defeat the rest of the league by at least two goals in each of the rest of their regular season games. They led the KFHL in goal scoring with Isaac Franco(13), Eric Smith(13), and Brieann Treloar(12) leading the way. Their Defense was terrific in 96 with Samantha McIntyre(#1 in the league), Melissa Nisse, and Kate Spears in particular making life difficult for opposing attackers. Rookie Goalie Joe Harmon was excellent in net with two shutouts for the Leafs.

Going into the Playoffs everyone expected the Leafs and Wings to face each other in the Finals as the Red Wings had been really tough as well during the regular season. It was not to be however as the Rangers made their third Finals appearance in the last 4 years. The Rangers saw this as a chance to upset the Leafs just as they had in 94 and it almost happened. At the end of three periods the score was tied at three goals each. Isaac Franco scored in overtime to be named MVP of the playoffs and give the Maple Leafs the Playoff Championship.
